More questions and answers
I would like to report that unfortunately, the visa did not arrive in time for my trip to the United Kingdom. However, I paid for accommodation, the visa, and study fees with the scholarship, which are non-refundable. I have around 5000 SEK left from the grant. Would it be possible to use these funds for another research visit I have in November this year?
What you can do is request a reprioritization of your scholarship. To submit a request for reprioritization of your grant, please follow these steps:
- You write down the reason for the reprioritization and what you want to use the grant for instead.
- Your supervisor will write and sign a certificate confirming that your request for reprioritization is correct.
- You attach any supporting documents that prove the reprioritization. For example, if you want to go to a conference, attach a confirmation that you are going to the conference, conference confirmation or something similar.
- You then send this to us and we will check with the person who reviewed your application whether you can use the money in another way.
Do you have to return the remaining amount of the grant to the foundation if you do not use the entire grant within a certain period?
If you are awarded a scholarship, you have 3 years to report the results and you must report the results before you can apply again. The report must also include a simple financial overview of how the grant was used, but we do not request receipts or similar. If the doctoral student has not used the entire grant, it is possible to either repay the unused part or send a request via email to use the remaining funds for something further linked to the project.
I have been granted funds from you that were intended to be used for a conference we planned to attend. However, the conference was canceled, and the trip did not take place. I would therefore like to check with you if it is possible to use the funds for another future trip or alternatively for other expenses related to the project.

Is it possible to apply for the scholarship for a clinical/medical project, or is the grant primarily intended for projects within social sciences, humanities, economics, or law?
The scholarship is aimed at all doctoral students at Umeå University, as well as master’s students, who reside in one of the three counties of Norrland and are members of one of the student unions. A high proportion of the applications we process each semester are from the field of medicine.
Can the grant cover salary costs, or must it be used for other expenses such as travel or materials?
The scholarship cannot be used to cover regular salary from the institution. However, if a doctoral student has run out of funding in the form of salary, the scholarship can be awarded to cover part of the salary, up to a maximum of 1/5th of the price base amount for 3 months.
Can I, as a PhD student, apply for a scholarship to cover the cost of a work computer or expenses related to Open Access?
The Kempe Board usually does not approve costs that should be covered by the institution where the PhD student is working, the same goes for the cost of Open Access and for basic statistical help. The institution should provide these for its doctoral students. If the application is for a specific computer needed for a specific purpose, or for example advanced statistical analysis that the institution cannot provide, the application can sometimes be approved if the applicant can justify to the committee why an exception should be made in that specific case.
Regarding the list of qualifications, are you referring to a CV, or should it include other information or be formatted differently?
We usually avoid giving too detailed instructions on how the CV should look like as it varies a lot depending on the applicant. Many people send their CV with their application. The most important thing is that you include the qualifications that you consider relevant to your application, such as your previous education, any publications you have had and other qualifications in, for example, working life that can be seen as beneficial to your research education.
What is a population registration certificate?
This means that you request an extract from the Swedish Tax Agency showing that you have a residential address in one of the counties of Västernorrland, Västerbotten or Norrbotten. What we need is a copy of a personal identity card from the tax authority, which can be obtained from the Swedish Tax Agency’s website.
As I understand it, it is possible to request that the scholarship be paid into the institution’s account. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to this compared to receiving the scholarship in the usual way?
The advantage of having it paid into the departmental account is that it is linked to your project account with them and becomes easier to follow for you and the department. However, we have received reports in the past that sometimes overhead costs (OH) have been deducted when it is deposited in the departmental account according to the university-wide standard for OH. If the money is deposited in the private account, there are no such regulations, for better or worse. We do not make an assessment of which account is specified, but we pay out to what is specified. Many people also leave the field blank as they only receive a project account when an application is approved.
Can I, as a PhD or Master’s student, apply for the Kemp Scholarship for financial reasons?
If the applicant meets the other requirements, it is possible to apply. In the case of aggravating social and economic circumstances, scholarships can also be applied for the completion of studies for a basic academic degree, such as a master’s degree.
How will I be notified about the decision, whether my application has been approved or not?
Once all applications received for the application period have been reviewed by the members of the Kempen Board, the administrator will contact all applicants to let them know whether their application has been approved or not. You will therefore be contacted by the administrator by email.
When will I receive the decision regarding whether my application has been approved or declined?
The committee that decides on the applications meets in May and November. Shortly afterwards, Kempe’s administrators email out the decisions. It is therefore not possible to say an exact date when you will receive a decision.
